SUPER NEMO project builds on the previous project NEMO 3 (Neutrino Ettore Majorana Observatory). It is an international research project in which various research institutions from around the world are involved. Scintillation detectors for the SUPER NEMO project represent non-standard products. Currently in addition to our company it is also the American firm Eljen and Russion firm SUJV Dubna which participate in the first phase of the development of new scintillation detectors for detection of neutrinos.
Czech Republic's representative in the project is the Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics of Technical University in Prague. The project is devoted to the search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) and to the accurate measurement of two-neutrino double beta decay (2νββ). The results of this basic research will help to clarify the elementary theory of structures and properties of matter. The pillar of the project SUPER NEMO is the construction of the detector capable of registration processes with efficiency higher than the device NEMO 3 allows. The NEMO 3 detector is installed and currently running in the Fréjus Underground Laboratory (4800 m w.e.) in France. Achieving the required parameters provides facility consisting of approximately 15 000 scintillation blocks with defined attributes. Dimensions and shape of crystals are the subject of theoretical studies based on mathematical modeling efficiency which will form the basis for selecting the most appropriate units for experimental testing and determination of the final product. Criteria for selection of contractor for the project include in addition to detection properties of scintillator also ease of handling (there is the advantage of polystyrene products) and the possibility of assembling the detector - the packaging and installation of a photomultiplier which is possible well within the frame of our existing human and technological capacity to provide. |
